Explore Tohoku Freeride Japan

Description

Explore Tohoku is a freeride ski trip in Japan organized by the Swedish agency Active Ski Travel, with whom I have been working for several years as a UIAGM mountain guide. Together we have done several freeride stays in Japan. For the first time I am offering stays organized by them, which I lead (or with my colleagues) for sale also for Slovak clients.

Tohoku is a region in the north of the Japanese island of Honsu that has so far been minimally affected by tourism. From Tokyo, a high-speed Shinkansen train will take you at 320 km/h to Aomori, where our freeride adventure begins.

We will meet at the train station after arriving by Shinkansen train from Tokyo to Aomori and check in at the JAL City Hotel, where we will spend the first three nights. From the hotel, we’ll head out together into the deep powder of Aomori Springs or take advantage of the endless off-piste opportunities in the Hakkoda area. Each ride will start with a lift ride and a short climb on the ski lift tracks.

After three nights in Aomori, we will take the Shinkansen about 20 miles south to Morioka, where we will stay at the Dormy Inn Hot Springs. From Morioka, we can easily reach several ski resorts located in different climatic zones affected by different temperatures and precipitation. This gives us great flexibility in finding the best snow. Here we visit resorts such as Geto Kogen, Appi Kogen, Hachimantai, Shizukuishi and Tazawako, which offer great powder experiences.

Mandatory equipment:

Difficulty:

• advanced skiing skills in skialp and freeride
• the ability to ski 3000m of vertical drop per day in deep powder
• ability to climb a minimum of 500 m of elevation gain per day
• good physical condition and good health
• English language is an advantage
