Last winter with Dynafit

The past season was intense. I spent many days in the field, whether guiding, on my own events or on expedition. Dynafit kept me company everywhere.

High Tatras

The season started promisingly with fresh powder. However, snow conditions have varied in recent years. After a snowfall, the snow is quickly remade and the powder is gone. As a rule, you will cross several valleys and encounter ten types of snow during your hike. Most of the time I had my Dynafit Blacklight 95 skis with Superlight bindings. The skis I used were the Dynafit Radical PRO and the new Dynafit TLT X. The Radical PRO is a harder boot definitely more ride oriented than climbing oriented. The new TLT X proved to be feathers on my feet with exceptional freedom of movement. Great for climbing. I’ve also taken them on a number of combo hikes with climbing and they behave great with crampons when ice climbing or light mixes. It’s a super lightweight boot for hikes where you need low weight, freedom, speed, and you have strong enough feet and technique in the downhill. So lower flex won’t be a problem for you.

Davos, Switzerland

In the second half of January 2022 I led two freeride camps for Sherpas Ride in Davos. Snow conditions were weaker but we still found places with fresh powder. Part of the camp was also a lesson on avalanche issues. After skiing each night we always discussed the avalanche topic. The next day we practiced in the field what we had covered in the lectures, but most importantly we skied a lot. On free days I went out to discover new terrain around Davos. There are countless possibilities there, from extreme riding to freeride powder flats.

Ski and Sail, Norway

Ski and Sail it was for me a month on a yacht in Arctic Norway around Tromso. I led 4 tours for Sherpas Ride. Each tour starts on a Saturday and finishes a week later on a Saturday. Saturday was the only “rest” day for me. The days in between were filled with pedaling and skiing in the incredible outdoors of the Norwegian mountains. Each hike starts right from the boat at sea level. Elevations range up to 1500m a day and the hikes always end back on the boat. I skied the entire month on Dynafit Free 107 skis in 188 length with ST Rotation 14 DIN bindings. The skis I used were Dynafit Radical PRO. It’s a heavier set up but offers great rideability especially in deep snow. The skis are especially suitable for open turns and fast powder riding. They should definitely not be taken on the piste or in the drums. The skis like strong legs, determination and courage at speed.

Denali, Alaska

We came to Alaska with a clear goal. To climb Denali twice by two different routes, West Buttress and Cassin Ridge. We had skis as a means to ease the ascents and speed up the descents. I also had an ambition to try some skiing however this was a secondary objective and the conditions proved unsuitable for skiing steep sections due to the ice passages. On the other hand, the ice conditions were great for climbing. I had my Dynafit Blacklight 95 skis with Superlight bindings and Dynadfit Radical PRO boots. I preferred these sturdier boots over the TLT X mainly because of the cold temperatures so I wouldn’t freeze. They were very good both temperature-wise and with other features. The skis fulfilled the role of an ideal means of transport. They made sled pulling, moving on glaciers in deep snow much easier. They reduced the risk of falling into crevasses and also proved to be good as tent anchors. Last but not least, the skis made it easier for us to descend back to base camp through endless glaciers. Without them, everything would have been considerably more difficult.

If any of the above appeals to you, sign up for a freeride camp via Sherpas Ride (Japan, Norway or the Alps) or choose a tour in Slovakia on this website of mine. See you on skis 🙂
